The Holmes Family
By
Mark K. Brown
This branch of the Holmes family was descended from Kormak Sigurdson, Irish-Norwegian lord of the holding eventually known as Sigerside, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. One of his daughter was an early ancestor of the Grebson family, ancestors of the Claytons (see the lineage of Clayton), having married Godwulf of Grebson.
A later master of Sigerside, Mycroft Holmes, married Agatha Bumppo, daughter of Sir Nathaniel Bumppo of Winestead Holdernesse. His daughter, Anne, married another Grebson, John Ralph, 9th Baron and 4th Earl Grebson.
Present at the meteor fall, were Dr. Siger Holmes and his wife, Violet Clarke Raffles.1 The doctor was related to both the the Greystokes and the Drummonds, although the Holmeses had never been members of the nobility.
Siger and Violet were the parents of Mycroft Holmes, who married --Vernet, daughter of 'Carle' Vernet, and sister to Horace Vernet, both of whom were famous French artists.
Mycroft and -- were the parents of Siger Holmes.2 Siger's wife was Violet Rutherford, daughter of the 12th baron Tennington (see the Lineage of Rutherford).
Siger's children included Sherlock, Mycroft , and Sigrina.
Sherlock Holmes, the famous consulting detective had a child by Irene Adler, the equally famous singer. This child, raised by his mother in Montenegro, was the American investigator Nero Wolfe, whose cases have been chronicled by his assistant, Archie Goodwin, and edited for publication by Rex Stout.
Sherlock and Mycroft's sister, Sigrina, was the mother of Sir Denis Nayland Smith, the tireless foe of Fu Manchu.

1 Although Farmer merely refers to her as "Violet Clarke," he says that she was the sister of Alice Clarke Raffles, the 2nd wife of Sir Percy Blakeney. Since there is no evidence that Alice has been married before, and she is the great aunt of A.J.Raffles, and a cousin to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, it does not seem to be unreasonable to conclude that Raffles was the name of Violet and Alice's father, who married a Clarke (See the Lineage of Clarke).
2 Farmer also mentions that the Holmeses were descended from the Conynghams, family of the marquess of Conyngham and the Baron Minster of Minster Abbey in Kent. This family was also among the ancestors of Sir Richard Francis Burton, and Farmer says that Burton and Dr. Siger Holmes were cousins.
