Starting about three million years ago a the race of beings knows by the Ancients as the Proteges and called by themselves, the Preservers, dedicated their civilization to a two fold task. First to preserve the work of the Ancients and and to achieve what the Ancients had done, to become Pure Thought/Energy. By using technology abandoned by the Ancients they sought to understand Life and Intellect by studying all sentient races in minute detail.

In many time lines this study was rather benign and did not affect the cosmos in any great manner.  In these timelines when the Preservers located a species emerging into sentience they planted massive collection devices in the planetary core of the species world. These collection devices recorded the memories and personalities of every individual from their birth to their deaths up to the death of the species on artificial energy constructs known as wathans as depicted in the Riverworld series by Philip Jose Farmer.

However due to the destruction of Thyoph, the main base of the Preservers and the former main world of the Ancients, the Preservers were forced to take a more indirect approach in many projects in other time lines  which resulted in many grave consequences.

Thyoph had been artificially created as a means of observing the development of the Earth's solar system, it was later used as a central meeting location and as the repository of the combined knowledge of the Ancients and the Preservers. The Preservers grew so close to achieving the evolution from matter to energy that the jealous Cthluloid deities, lead by Azathoth destroyed the planet, creating the asteroid belts that dot the earth's solar system.

While the destruction of Thyoph did not cause the extinction of the far flung Preservers or end their mission of preserving the works of the Ancients and achieving the evolution from matter to thought, it certainly did cripple it. The effect was so curtailing that they were unable to take a direct hand in many projects so they created artificial life forms to aid them in this goal.

Taking a small benign parasite they altered its genetic makeup so that it will act as living recording device. By attaching itself to a host, the parasite records its hosts memories and experiences and stores them. The parasites were long-lived and slow to mature. Part of its symbiosis with its host was that it extended its longevity to its host as well as increasing the host’s vitality and regenerative capabilities.

This was an experiment that went drastically wrong and had dire consequences for the cosmos.

95% of the program was a complete success. However, in three cases due to various environmental conditions, the parasites mutated. Each acquired sentience of a sorts and developed into the three parasitic races we know today as the Goa'uld, The Hive and the Colonists.

Not ones to give up despite failures the Preservers attempt another form of living recording devices. This time they made benign changes to the DNA of a group of primitives on a planet called Earth. Their primary recording devices are human beings made practically immortal by being attuned to their planet's electromagnetic field. The recorders senses are enhanced to make their records as complete as possible. Although they begin recording from the first few minutes of consciousness their immortality is switched on when they suffer a mortal injury that first triggers regeneration. They stay at the biological age that the immortality was switched on.

These immortals die an actual death only when the central nervous system is severed from brain function. At that time all of their memories are forcibly uploaded into the nearest recorder. One recorder can carry the accumulated memories of several recorders. The mutation was programmed to random and confined to one generation, each immortal being sterile. The recorders can sense one another's proximity, so as to be nearby if another recorder should undergo the true death.

This speculation was formed from the Highlander movies and television show. I could never believe that the immortality as portrayed would evolve naturally, especially since the immortals were sterile. This explanation I hope explains how they came to be, why they take on another memories and the electrical effects that follow the taking of a head.

The immortals eventually formed a ritualized belief system where they believed that a prize existed for being the last of their kind. The taking of heads and the downloading of memories became an intoxicant to several of the immortals, as did the ruling of mortals.

As a double blind, the Preservers also created shielded immortals. They were also "switched" on after suffering such a grave injury that regeneration was necessary. Despite being attuned to the electromagnetic field for recording purposes, they saved their memories in a purely chemical and biological fashion. They could not sense or be sensed by the other immortals. They were also able to procreate, the immortality gene a rare recessive.  The purely biological storage of memories, transmission of memories  and transmission of immortality also had unforeseen consequences resulting in the conditions that would become known as possession and reincarnation.

Possession took on two forms. The first was when an immortal of the Highlander type was killed  and there was not another Immortal of that type to download the memories they would be transferred to any shielded immortal who happened to be in the transference radius. The memories and personalities were laid upon the shielded immortals mind but with no method for him to assimilate those personalities and memories. The increased electromagnetic energy surrounding the hidden immortal caused visual distortions and affected the brain activities of those persons who came in contact with them, causing them to see, hear and experience hallucinations.

The overlaid data would usually be expelled from a shielded immortal once a highlander type immortal walked into the transference radiance. Sometimes the shielded immortal could expel the data by force of will, often channeled by some type of exorcism.

The second type of possession is purely biological. The non immortal descendants of shielded immortals received the memories and personalities of their ancestors as part of their genetic heritage but it was for the most part dormant and remained as bits of genetic coding to pass onto their descendants. However in some cases the memories and personalities of one or more ancestors would become activated and take possession of the body.  In a sense this was both possession and reincarnation.

Although reincarnation technically when a descendant of shielded immortals became aware of one or more of their dominant ancestors memories and personalities and while not possessed by them, were certainly influenced by them.

The shielded immortals connection with the electromagnetic field also gave them other unforeseen abilities, such as the ability to sense and travel to parallel universes. In rare instances there are born shielded immortals that cannot only sense other dimensions and realities but also manipulate them, transferring objects, people and energies from one reality to another. They also have the ability to manipulate matter and energy using their connection to the earth's magnetic field to effect matter-energy conversions.

They were known as gods and wizards. Merlin was one. As time went by however, while the immortality factor remained a rare trait, quite a few of the descendants of the shielded immortals, while not immortal themselves did possess some of the other abilities of their genetic heritage, such as the ability to travel to sense and travel to other worlds and to manipulate matter and energy.

There was another unforeseen consequence that arose from the creation of the all three of the recording devices, at least as far as Earth was concerned. The parasitic races that arose from the first model of recording devices eventually found their way to earth. When the Goa'uld  attempted to take over the bodies of Immortals they found that the immortals were immune not only to their infestation but also to that of the Hive, of which they have a few captured subjects. These are the immortals, both shielded and non-shielded. The introduction of the parasites DNA into that of the human immortals creates several mutations, which are collectively known as vampirism. The variant vampire mutations are can also be transmitted from person to person.

The Immortals affected by the Goa'uld virus have an overwhelming thirst for mammalian blood serum. They do in fact grow fangs, are allergic to sunlight, wood, garlic and silver. They also gain psionic powers of telepathy, mesmerism, and in a few rare cases flight. They however do not
die from lack of blood, merely wish that they would and it is true that if they go for a time without it they will fall into a coma. The immortals affected by a Hive derived vampiric virus have all of these and also have the ability for limited  shape shifting courtesy of the Aesir DNA in the hive strains. (The Aesir or Greys are shapeshifters as demonstrated by the X-Files episode "The Unnatural") eventually all immortal vampires would carry both strains.

Both sets of vampires could also pass the vampirism virus onto mortal human beings by blood exchange, although there is some still unknown genetic factor because only ten percent of those bitten actually become vampires.

Humans affected by the vampirism virus emulate to some extent the Immortals in that they also stop aging at the age they were affected. However sunlight, silver, garlic and wood can kill them. They can also pass on the virus but with a lesser success rate.

Approximately 900, 000 years in the past The Preservers discovered  a dormant pocket universe created by the Ancients designed to study human evolution and cultural development. The Ancients were after all practically immortal and fascinated by the human species, this may have been the equivalent of an ant farm.  After switching it on, the Preservers left. This is the home universe of the Thoan. who will one day discover a method of creating pocket universes themselves.

The Preservers seemingly retired from active participation on the Universes approximately 250,000 years ago, although they would continue to exhibit small signs of still being present every now and then.

The reason for this was the destruction of Thyoph, the main base of the Preservers and the former main world of the Ancients.

The effect was so curtailing that they were unable to take a direct hand in many projects which resulted in many grave consequences.

They evidently had some interest in preserving Terran cultures and species, they seeded planets throughout the galaxy with earth populations that were either replicated, were shunted through the Ancient's system of Stargates or a combination of the two. Although the Goa'uld would claim to have both built the stargate system and have seeded the galaxy, these claims are quite exaggerated. While they might have moves small populations through the stargates, the Goa'uld are true parasites, creating very little.

Not all of the planets seeded by the Preservers were connected by stargates. Several such planets were discovered by the crew of the starship Enterprise in the as portrayed in the episodes,  "The Omega Glory", "Bread and Circuses", "Miri" and "The Paradise Syndrome"  The Preservers also seeded the Counter Earth Zillikan (even made an appearance in the novel Bunduki) of the Burroughs Universe. They must have also seeded its extra dimensional counterpart Gor.
